Rex royally leads 3 Mardi Gras parades Tuesday in New Orleans

Rex Mardi Gras throws 2016 A sampling of Mardi Gras throws the members of Rex will throw on Fat Tuesday.

Mardi Gras fans will be able to enjoy three parades on Fat Tuesday (Feb. 9) on the Uptown New Orleans route. Rex starts at 10 a.m., followed by the Elks Krewe of Orleanians and Crescent City truck parades.

Rex began in 1872 and started many of the Carnival symbols and traditions in New Orleans. This year the krewe introduces the Butterfly King, its fifth permanent float. The king of Carnival is Michael Kearney.

Truck parades also are part of Carnival history. In addition to throwing liberally, Elks Orleanians and Crescent City choose winners of truck designs in their parades."
