New Orleanians take their king cake seriously, very seriously. We've discover this whenever we write about king cake. Folks love to root for their favorites.
In 2017, in an attempt to find lesser-known bakeries and go deeper into communities to discover which cakes residents like best, we ran five king cake polls asking readers to nominate and then vote for best king cakes by geographic area.
In New Orleans, the clear winner was Dong Phuong in New Orleans East, which received more than twice as many votes as the No. 2 cake from the brand new Bywater Bakery. Bywater opened on Jan. 6, just in time to sell king cakes this Carnival, but is not yet open for breakfast and lunch.
We ran polls for East Jefferson and the North Shore, naming top vote-getters as well. Read about them here and here, respectively. (When we sought nominations, however, neither the West Bank or outlying parishes sent us enough nominees to warrant a poll. See the nominees here and here, respectively.)
The top five New Orleans king cakes are listed, starting with the cake that received the most votes in our poll.
