Irma Thomas to serve as grand marshal for Nyx 2017

The Soul Queen of New Orleans will get a new title when Nyx rolls on Wednesday, Feb. 22: grand marshal.

Irma Thomas steps into her new role when the parade hits the streets for its sixth year, leading the all-female krewe's members as they travel along the traditional Uptown route.

"The Mystic Krewe of Nyx is proud to have a singer and performer as renowned as Ms. Irma Thomas to lead our parade," said Nyx captain Julie Lea in a press release. "Not only does she embody the heart and soul of New Orleans, but she is an icon that all ladies can relate to. She is the perfect choice to serve as Grand Marshal of our 6th annual parade."

Also joining the parade in 2017 is New Orleans Police Department First District Sgt. Zenia Smith-Williams as Nyx Goddess VI.

"It's my responsibility as the reigning goddess to represent the krewe of 2,951 ladies," Smith-Williams said in a press release. "It's a big honor."

Nyx in 2017 will parade with 42 floats and will unveil a brand new doubloon, shaped like the krewe's signature purse logo. Also making a return are the dancing Nyxettes, and the Nyx Purse Tracker on Facebook, where those who catch the handmade, glittered purses created by each individual krewe member can share photos of their catches.
