Mardi Gras 2017: Zulu and Rex arrive for Lundi Gras

Rex has officially been given the key to the city by Mayor Mitch Landrieu in a ceremonial move on Lundi Gras (Feb. 27) when the King of Carnival gets the traditional rights to reign in New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

This year's official reception of Rex took place in Spanish Plaza and featured a day-long festival with live music. Rex and his entourage arrived aboard a specially decorated, vintage train.

Rex, the role of whom this year is filled by Dr. Stephen Hales, will lead the organization through the streets on Tuesday. The parade rolls at 10 a.m.
