The Mystic Club, founded in 1922, had its first ball in 1923. The organization's annual ball features elaborate costumes, particularly for the queen, based on a different historical theme. The Saturday night before Shrove Tuesday is the ball when the queen for that year is announced, and her court presented to the ball's invited guests.

The designer of the queen and her court costumes is Mary Williams. (The men's costumes were made for years by Ilaine Hartman, who retired in 2015; Royal Design House has taken over.)
