Mardi Gras 2013: Krewe d'Etat serves up cranky comedy

The Mardi Gras 2013 Le Krewe d’Etat seemed especially well designed this year, with particularly cantankerous sculpture and piercing painting on its satiric floats. The theme this year was a peek into The Dictator’s Library (The Dictator is the group’s revolutionary leader). But the theme, of course, is merely a skeleton upon which to hang the krewe’s cranky brand of comedy.

As always, le krewe heaped cartoonish scorn on politicians, celebrities and organizations that they deemed to have disappointed them in the previous year. They equated NFL commissioner Roger Goodell with the Godfather. Governor Jindal was Scrooge. Former Mayor Nagin was a greedy octopus. The GOP was a Confederacy of Dunces. Facebook is foolish. The country’s economy is sliding toward the abyss. Obama care will ruin us. Tom Benson owns too much. The British monarchy is scandalous. The Landrieus are a dangerous dynasty. You get the picture.

Part of Carnival is social catharsis and d’Etat delivers the guilty guffaws aplenty. Next to Krewe du Vieux, I find d’Etat to be the parade with the most political punch. Needless to say, | The Times-Picayune took a pummeling.

Favorite float: Visually, the Entergy-skewering float strung with red spaghetti-like power chords was the winner.

Favorite throw: All d’Etat’s political lampooning has provoked a political thought of my own. Wouldn’t it be sweetly subversive if d’Etat was the first of the major parades to insist on locally bought throws? Imagine if the politically satirical parade actually took political action. Just a thought. Oh, what was my favorite throw? Anything that sparkles at it flies adds to the visual richness of the parade, but I didn’t take anything home.

The rating: Doug MacCash rates select 2013 Mardi Gras parades. From best to worst, the ratings are: Ruler of the Route, Rolling in the Right Direction and Lost its Way.

If you agree with their political point of view or not, you’ll agree that Krewe d’Etat delivers on its promise of provocation. The parade is work of Royal Artists. As The Dictator already knows, Krewe d’Etat is a Ruler of the Route.
