Cajun Pecan House's pecan king cake

Sometimes you come across a king cake when you least expect it. While visiting my husband's family on Bayou Lafourche, I stopped in the Cajun Pecan House, which is know for it pecan desserts. And, of course, they have a pecan king cake, too. We had to taste it.

This little business on Bayou Lafourche seems to be equal part bakery, candy store and gift shop. Stop in and it's liable to be full of old friends and neighbors catching up. Its king cakes comes in three sizes and nine flavors. We tried the pecan, the simplest, and found that the cake itself has a bread-like quality, heartier than most and lightly sweet. The pecan filling is a sweet schmeer of cinnamon and sugar loaded with small pecan pieces. One cool thing: If shipped, the cake comes in sturdy box, with the undecorated cake in plastic bag. White, spreadable icing and purple, green and yellow granulated sugar are packed on top -- each in its own little container. To decorate, heat the white icing in a microwave, spread it on the cake and then sprinkle away. The shop feels that iced cakes just don't travel well. When we asked if they knew if anyone else ships a do-it-yourself king cake, the answer was: "Everybody should."
