Good morning, New Orleans: North Side Skull & Bone Gang kicks off Mardi Gras

Good morning, New Orleans: It's Mardi Gras.

The North Side Skull and Bone Gang woke up the Treme on Mardi Gras Day (Feb. 28), taking to the streets of the historic neighborhood with oversized skull masks and carrying bones.

According to the House of Dance and Feathers' website, groups such as the one here exist "around the world (and) their use in masquerades honors the dead, comforts the bereaved, and connects us with those who came before. They can also express bawdy truths and poke fun at pretentions of the powerful and the hypocrisy of the pieties of the day."
